DIRTY PROJECTORS & TUNE-YARDS

Last night the Dirty Projectors rocked the Paradise. The crowd was clearly into the band though one of the best highlights of the night came when bassist Nat Baldwin informed the audience that it was his grandmother's 78th birthday - which launched the sold-out room into an impromptu 'Happy Birthday' song.

Most surprisingly though, the Tune Yards far exceeded nearly everyone's expectations. Looping both drumbeats and backup vocals at the beginning of each song, the Tune Yards duo created a deeply layered sound similar to Lady Smith Black Mambazo while the words were reminiscent of the straight-foward and full-hearted lyrical legacy of Woody Guthrie.

GHOSTFACE KILLAH

Next time Ghostface comes to town, don't forget your gasmask. Sources have it that the Paradise staff grew concerned at one point during the show that the smoke clouds billowing up from the crowd would set off the fire detector, which would in turn have shut down the PA system. Ghostface was good though...Brother Ali was better.

THE JESUS LIZARD

Classic performance. The Paradise regressed into a high school moshpit, led by the Jesus Lizard's high energy lead singer, who must have jumped into the crowd at least a dozen times over the course of the evening. This was a fun show and these dudes clearly still know how to rock it.

HONOR SOCIETY thanks to Tayla B

I went to the honor society concert on sunday the 15th and i must say, it was one of the greatest shows I've seen at the Paradise Rock Club. They were full with energy and very engaged with the crowd which is rare in a band. Amazing stage presence and sounded just like the cd. The crowd was very energentic and also very sweaty haha. Honor society blessed boston with their kindness and dedication to their fans. I got to meet them very easily by only buying a bag. I got the bag signed and got to give the lead singer a drawing i worked very hard on and it just made my night. I love seeing shows at the paradise rock club, its a fabulous venue and i cant wait for parachute in January!

BASSNECTAR 11.10.2009

Bassnectar played to a sold out crowd last night that included fans
from all over New England. This was the first time I had Bassnectar
and he certainly lived up to his reputation as one of the greatest.
Do not miss him next time he comes through town...and make sure to buy
your tickets early.

Justin Nozuka

Nozuka Review + Photo:

On Wednesday night, Justin Nozuka brought his soulful acoustic pop
sound to the semi-crowded Paradise Rock Club. Had someone told me he
had won American Idol, I definitely would have believed it. Nozuka's
music was driven primarily by his Timberlake-ish vocals and the
cacophony of catcalls erupting from the High School age girls
comprising over 80% of the crowd.

Though his style wasn't really my thing, at least I can say that I was
two degrees away from Kevin Bacon for the first time in my life: Bacon
is Nozuka's Uncle.

Overall C+
